RiverArts, in conjunction with the Hastings and the Dobbs Ferry Public Libraries is hosting a discussion of the 1933 film The Emperor Jones, based on the play by Eugene O’Neill and starring Paul Robeson.

Tanya McKinnon, Dobbs Ferry resident, literary agent and former RiverArts Board member, will moderate the conversation. You are encouraged to watch the film and two short documentaries PRIOR to the discussion here.

Presented by the The Finger Lakes Film Trail, this program is part of a Humanities New York funded project: Race Films/Race Matters. “Race films” were produced between the 1910s and the early 1940s and were created by Black film companies for Black audiences. They starred Black actors and emphasized Black-oriented issues and themes. The program uses race films as a starting point for necessary, informative, and provocative conversations about race, racial tension, and racial discrimination in America today. For more information on the Race Films/Race Matters series click here.
