Why “Wade in the Water?” Was there a reason to tell the chariot to “Swing Low?

Yolanda F. Johnson explores the emotional, spiritual journey and hidden communication in traditional African-American spirituals conveyed for the enslaved Africans in America and the influence of spirituals on music of the Civil Rights Movement on through popular music.

In this program, first premiered in Harlem in February 2011 for Black History Month, Yolanda offers audiences special insight on traditional spirituals and illuminates their hidden meaning through performance and conversation.

Part lecture, part recital, the program also includes a sing-along for audience members to gain a new understanding of these well-known and beloved songs. RiverArts’ Producer, Marie-Louise Miller, leads the conversation with Yolanda with opportunity for audience questions.

Producer, Marie-Louise Miller 

Yolanda F. Johnson has had an outstanding career as a performing artist and philanthropist; as a composer, as an educator, and as a supporter of the arts and women’s equity. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Yolanda has performed nationally and internationally in diverse musical venues including opera, concert, oratorio and sacred music. She is an active recitalist/lecturer on varied musical subjects, including spirituals as related to the Underground Railroad and the works of women composers. Yolanda has recorded an album of Spirituals, Feel the Spirit! and co-created Music She Wrote, a celebration of women composers, with colleagues, Dr. Brooke Bryant and Dr. Michael Eisenberg.

She completed her B.A. in voice performance, graduate studies in voice, and an M.A. in Arts Management. She then served as the Acting Executive Director of the Barthelmes Conservatory of Music and on the faculty of Tulsa Community College as a Voice and Humanities instructor before relocating to the NYC area. She is currently on the voice and music composition faculty at the Mozartina Music Conservatory and on the artist roster of the Westchester Chamber Soloists.

In addition to her life as an artist, Yolanda is also a current International Advisory Board member and former Representative for the Foundation for Post-Conflict Development to the United Nations, a member of the board of directors of the Hudson River Museum, Special Advisor to the American Composers Orchestra, board of directors of PowHer NY, board of directors of the Lehman College Art Gallery and is the first African American President of Women In Development, New York. Yolanda is also the Founder and President of YFJ Consulting, LLC and Founder of Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy (WOC)® and Allies in Action Membership Network.

Marie-Louise Miller
MFA, Producer, RiverArts Artist Conversation Series
Marie-Louise Miller is a world traveler, stage director, teacher, sometime dramaturge and currently arts events producer. Marie-Louise recently co-produced “Kindness Committee,” a new play by Melanie Hoopes, presented by RiverArts. She has had the honor of working with artists from all walks and disciplines over many decades from Berlin, Germany to New York. She is the Director of The LAB, a new initiative for teens in the Rivertowns, creator/director of the summer camp: “Mixing Myths: Adventures from Forest of Sesa Wu Suban,” and mother of two. 
Joyce Rasmussen Balint

Joyce Rasmussen Balint, mandolinist and violinist, teaches both instruments at the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory and has been the mandolin soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since l974. As a violinist, she has been an active free-lance performer in the New York metropolitan area, including the MET Opera, the Caramoor Festival Orchestra, the Westchester Symphony, and several opera companies. “Joyce Balint Shines in a String Recital” was the headline in the New York Times of her Carnegie Recital Hall. Ms. Balint lives in Bronxville. 
Chris Conte
double bass
Chris Conte, Bassist, performed as a double bassist with The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and The Chamber Orchestra of The Alleghenies.  He then had the good fortune of traveling throughout the continental U.S. while playing with shows like Irving Berlin's "I Love A Piano" and Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.  He has played dozens of other musicals; highlights being "Always, Patsy Cline," "James and the Giant Peach," and "Little Shop of Horrors.” 

 Chris is probably best known for leading his own small jazz groups where he sings while playing the Upright Bass.  His debut album "Our Love Will Last" has been featured on over 70 radio stations across America.  Chris can also been heard playing electric bass and singing in his original music project "The Phunk Philosophers."
Kate Dillingham

Kate Dillingham is a cellist, recording artist, and proponent of music of living composers who enjoys a multifaceted career on varied frontiers of the musical world. She has performed concertos in musical capitals from Salzburg to Moscow and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and The MET Museum. Ms. Dillingham was Executive Director from 2017-2021 the Queens New Music Festival (NY) and serves as President of the Violoncello Society of New York (VCS). She is Artistic Director of ArtsAhimsa: Music for Peace, a network of artists working to promote non-violence through affirmative power of the Arts. A skilled teacher and inventor, she founded MyBlueSkiesMusic.com; an online platform for musicians. 
Michael J. Eisenberg

Dr. Michael J. Eisenberg is a pianist, harpsichordist, and conductor dedicated to giving voice to the disenfranchised. He currently serves as the 2022-23 American Musicological Society Levy Grantee for performative research in North Africa and a 2022 Fulbright-Hays Fellow alternate to Morocco.  Dr. Michael J. Eisenberg has performed at the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series and was a conductor for the Placido Domingo Met Gala celebration.  He performs internationally and has appeared with National Public Radio, the BBC, CBC, and HBO. He was a member of the European Gershwin  "Porgy and Bess" tour and is a member of the award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Dr. Eisenberg has served as lecturer, recitalist, and researcher at Columbia, Juilliard, Harvard, UCLA and other institutions.

He has been active in advocacy as a Fulbright facilitator for the Civil Rights Enrichment program, and as an NEH fellow for music, culture, and civil rights in New Orleans and is a current NYC Mayor's Graduate Scholar JD candidate.

All attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination at the door. Until further notice, attendees will be required to wear masks at all indoor RiverArts events.
