SUMMARY:Schubert & Schumann
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS \nLed by Grammy-nominated cellist Peter Seidenberg\, chamber music royalty comes to the Cropsey Museum for a very special evening — marking ten years of music-making in one of the Hudson Valley’s most beautiful settings\, with the very same program that opened it all. Surrounded by the art and legacy of Jasper Cropsey and the Hudson River School\, this milestone concert brings back two of the most beloved works in the chamber repertoire: Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet\, radiating a warmth that has captivated audiences for two centuries\, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet\, composed in a rare season of happiness and confidence and glowing with that same contentment. Heard together\, these two works reveal composers writing not for showmanship but for togetherness. Presented on November 22 in a room built for beauty\, the result is an evening of unguarded warmth\, intimacy\, and melody: chamber music at its most personal and a truly unforgettable experience. \nAbout the Musicians\nAnton Nel (piano)\, winner of the first prize in the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall\, continues to enjoy a remarkable and multifaceted career spanning North and South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and South Africa. Highlights of his four decades of concertizing include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra and the symphonies of Chicago\, Dallas\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, Detroit\, and London\, drawing on an active repertoire of more than 100 works for piano and orchestra. An acclaimed Beethoven interpreter\, he has performed the complete concerto cycle\, all-Beethoven recitals\, and\, most recently\, the Diabelli Variations in Moises Kaufman’s play 33 Variations. \n“…an uncommonly elegant pianist.” — New York Times \n\nSought after as a performer and teacher\, Joseph Lin (violin) appears regularly throughout the U.S.\, Asia\, and Europe. He teaches violin and chamber music at The Juilliard School and served as first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet from 2011 to 2018. Recent projects include period-instrument Beethoven and Schubert with Robert Levin\, complete Beethoven violin sonatas with Helen Huang\, and Bach cycles marking the 300th anniversary of the Sonatas and Partitas. A founding member of the Formosa Quartet\, Lin won the 2006 London String Quartet Competition\, the 1996 Concert Artists Guild Competition\, and the 2001 Michael Hill Violin Competition. \n\n Violist James Dunham’s rich background includes founding membership in the Naumburg Award-winning Sequoia String Quartet and later the Grammy Award-winning Cleveland Quartet. An advocate for new music\, he has premiered works by composers including Libby Larsen and Judith Shatin\, and in 2018 was among seven violists selected by John Harbison to premiere his Viola Sonata. A frequent guest with the American\, Jupiter\, Pacifica\, and Takács Quartets\, he is violist of the Smithsonian’s Axelrod String Quartet. Dunham is Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music\, where he co-directs the Master of Music in String Quartet program. \n “The rich\, loamy sound of violist James Dunham…improved the balance between piano and strings in Mendelssohn’s Third Piano Quartet\, Op. 3.” – Charles T. Downey onTrio con Brio Copenhagen\nperformed at the Library of Congress\, Washington Post \n\nCellist Peter Seidenberg has played in major halls throughout the US\, Europe\, and Asia. He made his solo debut with the Chicago Symphony and served as principal cellist with the Century Orchestra of Osaka. A founding member of the Elements Quartet\, he has collaborated with members of the Cleveland\, Tokyo\, Juilliard\, and Emerson Quartets. Currently cellist for the Oracle Trio\, Queen’s Chamber Band\, and New York Chamber Soloists\, he studied at Eastman and New England Conservatory with Paul Katz\, Bernard Greenhouse\, and Alan Harris.
