SUMMARY:Virtual Salon Sundays | Rosalind Schneider
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 27 | on RiverArts’ Instagram Live\nRosalind Schneider | Mixed MediaWebsite | Blog \n \n \n \n \n \n Featuring Irvington-based artist\, Rosalind Schneider  \nRosalind Schneider creates work in video and painting that transcends its source to form a new reference to a visionary landscape.  The natural environment is a continuing source of inspiration. Layered landscapes progress from the real into abstraction and a fusion of the two.  They are expanded visions of the earth.  \nDigital Fusion paintings resulting from the capture of a video frame use computer technology as a starting point and are realized through hands-on manipulation. The surfaces are transformed by drawing\, acrylic and glass particle collage resulting in a luminous translation that speaks to its moving image origin.  Rosalind is most interested in the quality of light as a structural element.  The paintings are a fusion of multiple realities that are birthed from video.  \nAn extensive exhibition history includes the Hammond Museum\, the Hirshhorn Museum\, the Bronx Museum\, the Chelsea Museum\, the Hudson River Museum\, the NY Hall of Science millennium exhibit\, the Whitney Museum “The Color of Ritual\, The Color of Thought\, Women Avant-Garde Filmmakers in America\,” MOMA “Carte Blanche: Women Writing the Language of Cinema.” An installation of hers was chosen for the closing event of Art Basel at the Miami Beach Cinematheque.  Her 16mm films are currently being restored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will be part of the Academy Museum.  Rosalind attended Syracuse University School of Art\, Empire State College and the Arts Students League.   \nWebsite: www.rosalindscheiderart.com \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n How to watch Instagram Live:\nOne watches a live broadcast on the Instagram app on your mobile device or on Instagram.com. SUMMARY:Kindness Committee | An original play by Melanie Hoopes
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 18th at 7:00pmSouth Church  343 BroadwayDobbs Ferry\, NY 10522 \nTickets: $25 \n \n \n Tickets for Performance\n \n \n \n \n \n RiverArts presents Kindness Committee\, a new play written and directed by Melanie Hoopes on Friday\, March 18th and 19th at 7:00pm; This play is recommended for ages 13 and up. \nSet at a concert on a cold winter night\, Kindness Committee sneaks us into the minds of seven audience members connected by varying degrees to one another. As the musician performs\, each character’s inner world ignites. Some desire\, others despise. One mourns\, another commits to a life of living without a past. One warns of the limits of “kindness” while another embodies the act of forgiving. All of them peel away layers of their past as they reach for a sustainable present. \nKindness Committee delves deep into longings and forebodings\, and examines the increasing importance of strengthening our community as our social\, political and environmental problems mount. \nInspired by a concert by Bay Area-based singer/songwriter John Elliott\, Hoopes creates a fictitious world of characters interacting with one another\, the music and the afterglow it creates. Elliott generously lends his music to weave through Kindness Committee\, allowing the audience to be transported to the concert the characters attend. \nMelanie Hoopes\, a Hastings on Hudson resident\, brought us last season’s zoom performance of Six Feet\, a play about living in the age of Covid. With Kindness Committee\, Hoopes asks us to once again examine the present moment. As we accept our current reality\, we ask ourselves how we want to live moving forward. What must we fortifiy and what gets recycled? Like Six Feet\, Kindness Committee is darkly funny and sure to touch all hearts and souls. \n“John’s performance four years ago with Common Ground Concerts started it all. His breathtakingly honest and personal songwriting awed me. I was captivated by his descriptions of regrets and defenses\, exposing them all\, no matter how misshapen or how ugly. John treats his past with kindness and compassion and in doing this he invites the audience to do their own inventory with the same open-hearted approach. I began writing Kindness Committee to explore how others may have experienced John’s show but somewhere along the way it became a treatise on community. My conclusion is simple and needs to be screamed from the rooftops and tattooed on our arms: We are all we have. The survival of all beings and our beautiful planet depends on the strength of our relation to one another.” \nAbout Melanie Hoopes\, Writer and Director \nMelanie Hoopes is a writer whose credits include Six Feet: A Play About What’s Between Us (RiverArts)\, Lethal Lit (IHeartRadio\, EEP)\, One Giant Leap: The Apollo Moon Landing 50 Years On (The New York Times) and  Bloodline (Netflix). She is the creator and writer of the long-running New York-based episodic stage show\, Laurie Stanton’s Sound Diet\, a dark\, modern twist on Prairie Home Companion. Her public radio credits include This American Life\, Here’s the Thing and Unfictional. She is a producer and host of Yesteryear: Stories from Home\, a podcast about the history of living in a small village on the Hudson River. She lives in the Rivertowns with her family. \nAbout John Elliott\, Composer \nA native of Minnesota now living in California\, John Elliott has a worldwide following as a singer-songwriter. The Austin Chronicle writes John Elliott is “a legend among songwriters…bold and brave…his shows are not to be missed.” Cory Frye of the Corvallis Gazette-Times writes that Elliott has\, “an affection for the malleability of language\, the clever twists of phrase\, an appreciation for the liquid kinship between rhythm and sounds — how they collide in beautiful violence\, how they stand as ideas and images — even if they ordinarily wouldn’t deign to dance together or be seen in the same room.” \nWhile John has toured internationally since 2006 and his songs have been prominently heard on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy\, One Tree Hill\, and Californication\, he remains an independent\, unsigned\, and unaffiliated artist\, and he is proud of that fact. Calling himself a “songcyclist” for his eco-friendly propensity for pedaling his bike from one small venue to the next\, Elliott continues to build a dedicated following the old-fashioned way: one new believer at a time. \nChuck Schiele of The San Diego Troubadour says\, “John Elliott’s lyrics get in\, make their statement\, kick you in the teeth\, and get out before they start talking too much…And this lends to the urge of rolling any track to its beginning for another spin.” \nIn addition to contributing his music to Kindness Committee\, John will perform a live concert on March 26th at Common Ground Concerts. SUMMARY:Richard Strauss\, "Four Last Songs" | New arrangement for chamber ensemble\, world premiere
DESCRIPTION:Richard Strauss\, arr. Paul Brantley\, Four Last Songs | New arrangement for chamber ensemble\, world premiere \nSunday\, March 6 at 4:00pm\nSt Barnabas Episcopal Church\, \n2 Revolutionary Road \nArdsley\, NY\nTickets: $40 \n \n \n Tickets for Concert\n \n \n \n \n \n RiverArts Chamber Music Series celebrates the 2022 season with a world premiere performance of a new adaptation for chamber ensemble of Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs. This work has been commissioned by RiverArts in association with PREformances Chamber Collaborative. \nEsteemed New York City composer Paul Brantley adapted Strauss’ original\, scored for soprano and full orchestra\, for a chamber octet. This new work is scored for soprano\, clarinet\, string quartet\, double bass\, and piano. More than a reduction or adaptation\, it is analogous to a translation into a new language while at the same time being note for note faithful to the original. According to the New Grove Dictionary of Music\, “These autumnal\, luminescent late songs… are among Strauss’s finest works in any genre.” They were written in 1948 near the end of Strauss’ life and were not performed until 1950\, after his death. \nPaul Brantley is a contemporary composer much in demand. In addition to his own compositions\, he has made a specialty of these kinds of adaptations. “I relish the opportunity to have a creative encounter with such a great work — and with the extraordinary poetry of Hermann Hesse which Strauss sets. My modus operandi is not so much to (re-) arrange the work but to adapt it as faithfully and idiomatically as possible.” \nAlso on the program are Brahms’ Clarinet Trio and Stravinsky’s Suite from A Soldier’s Tale. \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artists \n\nComposer Paul Brantley’s compositions have been performed or commissioned by\, among others\, The Knights (at Tanglewood\, BRIC\, Dumbarton Oaks and Naumburg Concerts)\, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet\, Horszowski Trio\, Flux Quartet\, New Esterházy Quartet\, Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, U.C. SUMMARY:RiverArts Annual Chamber Music Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:RiverArts Annual Chamber Music Fundraiser\n \n Tickets for Event\n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday November 21st1:00–3:00pm The Newington-Cropsey Foundation25 Cropsey Lane\, Hastings-on-Hudson\, NY 10706Tickets: $100* \nRiverArts Chamber Music Series begins with our annual fundraiser event\, generously hosted the Newington-Cropsey Foundation on Sunday November 21 at 1pm. All tickets to this event must be purchased in advance. There will be no ticket sales at the door and the box office will close Saturday\, November 20th\, at noon. \nProgram Update: Attendees will get a sneak peak at RiverArts’ commissioned Chamber version of Strauss’ Four Last Songs.  This is the first time the arrangement will be performed in public and is not to miss! \nThe concert will feature Arnold Schönberg’s late romantic masterpiece\, Verklärte Nacht [1899] in its original version for string sextet. A reading of Richard Dehmel’s poem\, Verklårte Nacht which inspired Schönberg’s composition will precede the musical performance. This is a rare opportunity to hear the composition in its original sextet form as it is more commonly heard in Schönberg’s expanded version for string orchestra.  \nAlso on the program will be Richard Strauss’ Piano Quartet [1886]. Written at the very beginning of what was to become an indomitable career as a composer and conductor\, Richard Strauss poured his youthful spirit into this passionate\, exuberant piece. It remarkably foreshadows all the drama of his greatest operas\, Rosenkavalier and Salome\, in a chamber music setting.   \nThe Newington-Cropsey Foundation graciously hosts this annual fundraiser concert in the beautiful setting of their gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson. A reception with light refreshments will follow the concert. \nArtistic Director for Chamber Music\, Peter Seidenberg Chamber Music Producer\, Doug Coe  \nPerformers include: Ling Ling Huang\, April Johnson and Sylvia Volpe\, violin; Chi Chi Lin Bestmann and Kathryn Lockwood\, viola; Peter Seidenberg and Alan Weinstein\, cello; Tomoko Uchino\, piano; Anton Rist\, clarinet; Allison Charney\, soprano; Edoardo Ballerini\, reader  \nTicket is 50% tax deductible.*Proof of vaccination and masks are required to attend this event \n \n Tickets for Event\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artists  \nLing Ling Huang [violin] started violin at the age of 4 with her mother Lilan Z. SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Malcolm D. MacDougall III
DESCRIPTION:Artist Conversation | Malcolm D. MacDougall III\n \n Register for Event\n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, October 17thRiver Front Hangar west of 145 Palisade Street 3:00-4:30 pmIn-person: $15 \nIn our ongoing effort to connect local artists with art lovers we are proud to present our next RiverArts Artist Conversation with sculptor\, Malcolm D. MacDougall III live and in-person at his studio on the Dobbs Ferry waterfront on Sunday October 17th at 3pm.  \n“We are thrilled to have another wonderful opportunity to gather this great community of art appreciators together to learn about this incredible local artist’s perspectives and process\,” said Artist Conversation Producer\, Marie-Louise Miller.  \nMacDougall’s work transcends the physical. Led by the desire to capture the potential for movement in the objects around us and influenced by the world as seen through the lens of the microscope\, Macdougall creates sculpture which leads the imagination to touch the sublime.  \nMacdougall has seen two large scale works on display in NY City: “Conflicts of Growth” at Spring & Varrick in 2013 and “Microscopic Landscape” at Union Square Park in 2012. Said of his 2013 piece\, Microscopic Landscape\, It “is about potential energy and pushing a stagnant object as close to perceived movement as possible.”   \n“The sculpture serves as a snapshot of the ongoing activity in the neighborhood; it is a static object that maintains the constant anticipation of movement\, just as the grounds of Union Square provide the framework for the energetic flow of people and commerce.”  City Atlas: New York \n\nLocally\, his sculptures\, “Outcrops of Bacterial Growth” and “Eternal Conflicts of Growth” were displayed in Wagner Park and Kinally Cove of Hastings-on-Hudson respectively.   \n“We are inviting a limited audience to come to Malcolm’s studio and participate in a wide-ranging conversation with the artist about the motivation and inspiration for choosing materials\, his process for transforming objects into works of art\, and what he looks forward to at this stage of his creative life\,” says RiverArts’ Artistic Director\, Kate Ashby. To support the safe appreciation of art\, the live audience will be limited to 40.  We will also be recording this event and will offer this after the fact for $5.    \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n FOR MORE INFORMATION EMAIL: info@riverarts.org \n \n Register for Event

SUMMARY:Serene Spring | Chamber Music Recording
DESCRIPTION:Serene Spring – Chamber Music Recording \n \n Purchase Recording Here\n \n \n \n \n \n Access to the recording through Monday July 5th  Reording | $5 \nRiverArts is proud to offer an encore recording of our recent chamber music concert\, “Serene Spring” featuring The Solace Trio from the June 11th performace at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Ardsley. \nThe Solace Trio – April Johnson (Violin)\, Peter Seidenberg (Cello) and Tomoko Uchino (Piano) delivered a wonderful program of music from a variety of composers to turn the page on the last year and look forward to all that lies ahead. \nOpening with “Mozart-Adagio for Piano Trio” by Arvo Part\, the program continues with “Sonatina for Violin and Piano\, Op. 100” by Dvorak\, “Air for Cello and Piano” by Aaron J. Kernis and ends with Beethoven’s “Piano Trio in Eflat Op. 70 no. 2.” \n____ \nChamber Music Artistic Director Peter Seidenberg and Producer Doug Coe put together a program that sought to encapsulate the moment in time we all currently inhabit. Seidenberg commented that “We chose music that reflects the emotions of the unusual time we live in: dissonant but serene\, dark but earthy\, heartaching but hopeful\, challenging but affirming.“ \nArtistic Director Kate Ashby commented “RiverArts is delighted to present this uplifting musical program which celebrates the renewed spirit of springtime and the power of music to encourage\, to invigorate and to restore.” \nAbout the Musicians\nApril Johnson – April Johnson has performed throughout the US with the Oracle Trio and the New York Chamber Soloists. What began as an exploration of her Mediterranean heritage has become a journey by which to express profound emotion. She hand-cuts all materials faithful to the ancient tradition\, incorporating glass\, stone\, metal\, ceramic\, reclaimed materials. Her mosaics are born from memory and develop through a meditative and painstaking process over weeks or months. She is grateful for this creative path and the many teachers she has encountered along the way.
