Brown/EVIDENCE. For the last decade\, RiverArts has provided access to world-class dance companies to the Rivertowns. These annual Dance Concerts allow Rivertown audiences to experience these talented groups right at home. \nEstablished in 1985 by Ronald K. Brown\, EVIDENCE\, A Dance Company\, seamlessly integrates traditional African dance with spoken word and contemporary choreography. The Brooklyn based group aims to promote understanding of the human experience into the African Diaspora through dance and storytelling and to provide sensory connections to history and tradition through music\, movement\, and spoken word—leading deeper into issues of spirituality\, community responsibility and liberation. \nThrough their work\, EVIDENCE provides a unique perspective of human struggles\, tragedies\, and triumphs. Using the power of movement\, Brown emphasizes the significance of community within African American culture and introduces audiences to the captivating splendor of traditional African forms and rhythms. Additionally\, he is an advocate for fostering growth of the African American dance community and has been a vital force in encouraging young dancers to explore choreography and developing careers in dance. \nFounder and Artistic Director\, Ronald K. Brown\, is in great demand as a choreographer. He has set works on Ballet Hispánico\, Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago\, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, Ko-Thi Dance Company\, Philadanco\, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble\, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company\, Jennifer Muller/The Works\, Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire\, and others. He has collaborated alongside artists such as composer/designer Omotayo Wunmi Olaiya\, the late writer Craig G. Harris\, Director Ernie McClintock’s Jazz Actors Theater\, choreographers Patricia Hoffbauer and Rokiya Kone\, composers Jason Moran\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Bernadette Speech\, and more. \nBrown was the recipient of the 2020 Jacob’s Pillow Dance award and has been recognized for his choreography in Regina Taylor’s Crowns with the AUDELCO Award. Brown also received two Black Theatre Alliance Awards and a Fred & Adele Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography in the Tony Award-winning production of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. His contributions to the dance world have been acknowledged through honors such as the Def Dance Jam Workshop 2000 Mentor of the Year\, Doris Duke Artist Award\, NYC City Center Fellowship\, Scripps/ADF Award\, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship\, National Endowment for the Arts Choreographers Fellowship\, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship\, United States Artists Fellowship\, a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award\, Dance Magazine Award\, and The Ailey Apex Award. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to see this internationally-renowned dance company perform three of their signature pieces in the heart of the Rivertowns! \n \n Purchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Artist Conversation | T.S. Eliot & Benjamin Britten | An Immersive Dialogue of Poetry and Music
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 26th\, 3 pm145 Palisade Street\, Lobby SuiteDobbs Ferry\, NY 10522 \nTickets: $20/ must be purchased in advance  \n \n Purchase Tickets Here\n \n \n \n \n \n RiverArts will present an immersive experience of poetry and music featuring a reading of TS Eliot’s The Waste Land and performance of Benjamin Britten’s Suite for cello 1\, op 72.  These two works of art will be brought to life together in an intimate concert setting.  \nAward-winning narrator/actor Edoardo Ballerini will render the 100-year-old poem while virtuoso cellist Peter Seidenberg interprets the complex passions woven throughout Britten’s solo cello suite. Poetry and music\, intertwine\, underscore\, and respond to one another\, deepening our experience of these singular artistic masterpieces. The audience will sit in semi-circle around the artists\, creating an immersive experience for both performers and audience.  \nThere will be a conversation with the performers and Dr. Neil Arditi\, Professor of English Literature at Sarah Lawrence College\, led by RiverArts’ Producer & Artistic Director of Artist Conversations & Theater\, Marie-Louise Miller immediately following the performance.  \n \n \n \n \n \n The twentieth century was a time of mass barbarity and extraordinary hope marked by two world wars\, the negation and re-generation of civil society and the emergence of a new definition of the individual in art\, in society and in politics. Artists like T S Eliot and Benjamin Britten grappled with the starkness and the beauty of their time by creating new forms of expression which shape us to the present day.  \nThe Waste Land\, published in 1922\, is a melding of literary tradition with the experimentalism of free verse. The poem uses allusion\, quotation in several languages\, a variety of verse forms and poetic fragments to create a new voice for a culture in crisis. Eliot stated\, “Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.” What he sought\, as both a writer and a reader\, was “some direct shock of poetic intensity.” For many\, The Waste Land is a symphony of shocks which continue to enthrall readers and listeners alike.  \n“What always surprises people after hearing The Waste Land is how much of a narrative it has. For something so famously rich and complex\, it is also wonderfully accessible.” notes Edoardo Ballerini.  \nSuite for Cello 1\, was written in 1964 as one of three suites for solo cello inspired by and dedicated to Britten’s good friend\, Mstislav Rostropovich. The men were often separated by the on-going conflicts generated by the Cold War. In his speech on receiving the Aspen Award in 1964\, Britten said\, “Rostropovich was such a gloriously uninhibited musician\, with that enormous feeling of generosity you get from the best Russian players. I immediately realized this was a new way to play the cello\, in fact a new vital way of playing music.” The Suite is defined by an emotional range\, epic in nature. By turns anguished\, reflective\, menacing and fervent. The fluid tonality can be incredibly tense. Yet there are also notes of humor and triumph at the end of the piece.  “This suite was such an important war protest in 1963. And I cannot think of a more appropriate time to present this poignant plea for peace\,” states Peter Seidenberg.  \n \n Purchase Tickets Here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artist Conversation Series RiverArts creates opportunities to amplify the artistic voice\, bringing insight and delight to our community. We are proud to spotlight leading voices in art\, music\, poetry\, dance\, and theater.  \nUnder the direction of Marie Louise-Miller\, our Artist Conversation series offers a chance to get up close and personal with artists. The Conversation Series seeks to illuminate the process of creativity across all forms of art\, from the fine artist to performance artist.

Artists of all experience levels and backgrounds are welcome\, especially those that have always wanted to try their hand.  \nIn this non-instructional event\, we aim to create a relaxing\, social and inclusive environment for the community to come together for a fun night of drawing.  After some mingling with fellow guests\, participants will have an opportunity to capture the human body in poses of different lengths\, with breaks for refreshments in between.   \nThere’s wine\, crackers\, cheese and cookies to enjoy\, and our host curates a playlist to keep your energy flowing.  The evening lasts about 2 hours\, and participants leave with a collection of their new works… and maybe some new friends too. \nRiverArts is proud to be able to provide this unique opportunity right here in our Rivertowns\, an opportunity which is often only accessible to art students or by traveling into New York City\, with a significant investment of time and tuition.  Drink & Draw offers a perfect entry-level for the amateur artist\, and we have seen beginners improve significantly as their skills develop in subsequent sessions and they draw on their experience and learn from others.   \nModel provided. Please bring your own art supplies and arrive on time. Must be over 18 to attend. Wine for those 21+ \nFOR MORE INFORMATION EMAIL: jriesman@riverarts.org \n*If you are having issues registering from mobile please try from a desktop or use this link. \n#DrinkAndDraw \n \n Register for Drink & Draw here
