SUMMARY:Memory Palaces: Imagination & Reckoning in Mosaic | Artist Conversation with Haifa Bint-Kadi
DESCRIPTION:Memory Palaces: Imagination & Reckoning in Mosaic | An Artist Conversation with Haifa Bint-Kadi\n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, February 25\, 20242:00 PM – 3:30 PMUrban Studio Unbound66 Main St.\, Yonkers\, NY \n$15 in advance\, $20 at the door \n \n Purchase Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Join us for a conversation with artist Haifa Bint-Kadi as she unveils her new collection\, Memory Palaces\, led by Marie-Louise Miller. \nThis collection features 3-dimensional structures with mosaic elements representing the essence of home stemming from her deep connection to her own heritage to the Arab culture. Each palace is paired with an audio recording specific to the memories contained by the palace. \nMemory Palaces is inspired by Bint-Kadi’s childhood as a first generation Palestinian-Afro-Caribbean American and a daughter of refugees. Bint-Kadi’s work explores the feelings of nostalgia\, grief\, and yearning often felt by refugees and immigrants as they relocate in search of new homes. Each piece represents an evolution of memories drawn from the past into the present through the Bint-Kadi’s mosaic practice. This collection is made possible by a grant received from NYSCA. \nAbout the ArtistHaifa Bint-Kadi a first Generation Palestinian-Afro-Caribbean American\, a daughter of refugees\, a mother\, and a grandmother. Haifa was trained in Italy as a classical mosaicist\, but even in her early work\, she was always drawn to the idea of public art as an index or marker of lived experience. She holds a B.A. and M.F.A. from Istituto d’Arte per il Mosaico in Ravenna\, Italy\, and has been creating public art mosaics since 1993. She serves as a full-time curator for the City of Yonkers library system\, a certified teaching artist\, and an adjunct professor at Suny Purchase\, focusing on Arts for Social Justice. Haifa has created over 24 public art mosaics and steel sculptures across the state. Haifa’s studio practice revolves around family archives\, translating them into paintings and mixed media-maps exploring her Afro-Caribbean and Arab roots. Recognized with numerous awards\, grants\, and accolades\, including the Kennedy Center’s Steam Educator Award\, Haifa believes art fosters healing\, builds self-esteem and identity\, and inspires wonder and exploration.  \nAbout the Artist Conversation Series:   RiverArts creates opportunities to amplify the artistic voice\, bringing insight and delight to our community. We are proud to spotlight leading voices in art\, music\, poetry\, dance\, and theater. Under the direction of Marie Louise-Miller\, our Artist Conversation series offers a chance to get up close and personal with artists. The Artist Conversation Series aims to shed light on the intricacies of creativity across all its artistic mediums from the fine artist to the performance artist.  \n \n Purchase Tickets

Using the power of movement\, Brown emphasizes the significance of community within African American culture and introduces audiences to the captivating splendor of traditional African forms and rhythms. Additionally\, he is an advocate for fostering growth of the African American dance community and has been a vital force in encouraging young dancers to explore choreography and developing careers in dance. \nFounder and Artistic Director\, Ronald K. Artists of all experience levels and backgrounds are welcome\, especially those that have always wanted to try their hand.  \nIn this non-instructional event\, we aim to create a relaxing\, social and inclusive environment for the community to come together for a fun night of drawing.  After some mingling with fellow guests\, participants will have an opportunity to capture the human body in poses of different lengths\, with breaks for refreshments in between.   \nThere’s wine\, crackers\, cheese and cookies to enjoy\, and our host curates a playlist to keep your energy flowing.  The evening lasts about 2 hours\, and participants leave with a collection of their new works… and maybe some new friends too. \nRiverArts is proud to be able to provide this unique opportunity right here in our Rivertowns\, an opportunity which is often only accessible to art students or by traveling into New York City\, with a significant investment of time and tuition.  Drink & Draw offers a perfect entry-level for the amateur artist\, and we have seen beginners improve significantly as their skills develop in subsequent sessions and they draw on their experience and learn from others.   \nModel provided. Please bring your own art supplies and arrive on time. Must be over 18 to attend. Wine for those 21+ \nFOR MORE INFORMATION EMAIL: jriesman@riverarts.org \n*If you are having issues registering from mobile please try from a desktop or use this link. \n#DrinkAndDraw \n \n Register for Drink & Draw here

Ted and Nune discuss their new book\, Stone and Candle: Armenian Monasteries—the epic journey into the mountains of Armenia\, unpack the deeper meanings of the book’s title\, the inspiration for the trip\, and the power of connecting to the past while shaping a creative path into the future.  \nStone and Candle: Armenian Monasteries is a collection of images that pays homage to Armenian nature and the magnificent churches ingeniously assembled over centuries by stone. Within the book’s pages\, Ted and Nune’s work captures the profound play between human artistry and its surrounding natural environment. The images weave a narrative conveying the intrinsic connection between human creativity and the sacred architectural marvels of Christian heritage.  \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artists:   \nTed and Nune are a photographic team who seek inspiration and a spiritual dimension in the man-made world. They journey to discover monumental human constructions for studies of architecture and industry\, bringing a joint male-female point of view to their shared vision. Their work is held in many private collections and has been exhibited in many countries around the world.  \nSince 1987\, Katerina Spilio has worked for and later led Byzantine Icons Studio/Byzantium Arts Studio\, where she has crafted icons ranging from a sixteen-foot Last Supper to delicate miniatures measuring five inches across. Her religious artworks find homes in churches and private collections across the United States. Beyond her religious works\, Spilio’s secular work adorns private collections in the United States\, England\, and Greece. In addition to running her own business\, she is also a scenic artist for film and television. \n \n Purchase Tickets Here\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artist Conversation Series:   \nRiverArts creates opportunities to amplify the artistic voice\, bringing insight and delight to our community.
