What if Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother were really a witch? What if the Golden Goose could talk? What if Sleeping Beauty had bad breath? What if Cinderella didn’t end up liking the Prince?

Reclaim tales of witches and wolves, kids and rotten parents, magic and monsters with your own voice! Dig around in the awesome Grimm tales and pull out a story to make your own. Whose story is it anyway?

Come work with two of the best Creative Catalysts in town.  Marie-Louise Miller and Ellen Flaks  bring decades of experience helping young people “stretch their imagination muscles” beyond what they thought possible.  Marie-Louise has brought her wit and wisdom to classrooms and workshops from Sao Paulo to Hastings on Hudson.  Ellen has been teaching Creative Drama and Improv to people ages 3-103 all over the Rivertowns and beyond for over 20 years.  She will also be teaching improv the last week of SummerArts, RiverArts long running arts camp.

We’ll spend a week spinning our very own Grimm stories into whole worlds full of intrigue, magic and fun.  Storytelling can be a solo act or students can work on a story in small groups.  You choose which characters to follow, how the story evolves, and who your hero will be.  You’ll design the settings and clothes, map out the world of your story, flesh out characters and their conversations, and practice the great art of narration.

Finally, at the end of the week:

Students will present their process and their new Grimm tale to the group.

How we get there:

Day 1- We play theater games, get to know each other and explore stories, choosing our focus.

Day 2- We split into two groups: A and B. For the first part of the day A works on breaking the story down and reworking it and B works on theater games aimed at developing characters. We switch for the second part of the day, giving everyone time to explore story from all directions.

Days 3 & 4 Follow the model for Day 2.

Day 5- groups finish up their stories in the morning and present to everyone in the afternoon.
